Community with Altitude Celebrates Silver Anniversary

I have been visiting and reviewing golf communities for 10 years, and I don’t recall encountering one quite like Mountain Air, just 30 minutes north of Asheville, NC. Mountain Air is celebrating its 25th anniversary.
The top of the community is one of the highest developed spots, if not the highest, east of the Rocky Mountains. The community’s Scott Pool designed golf course and an airstrip share the top of the mountain, a unique experience if ever there was one. Where else does one wait between the 3rd green and 4th tee for a plane to land before proceeding across the runway?
Mountain Air is also unusual in that it was the brainchild of two local families, the Banks and Youngs, who acquired the 1,300-acre mountainside property with 100-mile views on a clear day. You won’t find better, or more distracting, looks from a golf course.
Mountain Air appeals substantially to couples and families as a second home location. It is cold on the mountain in the dead of winter, and many of the community’s amenities are shut down. However, for the small number of residents who love the quiet and isolation and don’t mind the cold, the restaurant’s chef can be called in to cook dinner in the clubhouse beside the stone fireplace. Homes range from $375,000 to $1.6 million and lots from $39,000, although one new listing is priced at $8,000.
