Many of the world’s most expensive cities are in and around the North American continent. Indeed, Hamilton, Bermuda is the single most expensive city in the world, according to the online data source Numbeo. But once you get through the rest of the top nine on the list – a preponderance of Swiss cities – the USA takes over, with New York at 10th, Honolulu at 11th and followed, in quick succession, by San Francisco, Oakland and Seattle.
Although there are many places in the U.S. Southeast region where a retiree from any of these expensive metro areas will find a much lower cost of living, the real motherlode of cost-of-living savings is outside the boundaries of the U.S. But is it out of bounds to consider living far from home?
