Cypress Landing is one of those golf communities that hides itself in plain sight. Located just a few miles from the major north/south route of U.S. Highway 17, the development located in the funny sounding Chocowinity, NC, checks all the boxes for fully amenitzed golf community located on a body of water –- in this case the Pamlico River -- that offers special water views from back porches, a peak from the golf course, and a place for captains to launch off for the Outer Banks and Atlantic Ocean beyond. (Even those who don’t own a boat join the community’s yacht club and get cosy with the boat owners, many of whom are happy to take friends out on the water.) Cypress Landing was developed in the early 1990s by paper giant Weyerhauser which, after a decade, left the community –- and pretty much the residential development business. The community’s residents rallied to put together plans for the future without the deep pockets Weyerhauser had and, except for a rather timid marketing plan, all decisions seem to have been appropriately made. The golf course by former President of the American Golf Architects Association, Bill Love, won’t break anyone’s back unless they play from the tips (at over 7,100 yards), and even then the wide fairways and approachable greens will keep any but the most wild swingers engaged. Perhaps most striking about Cypress Landing, at least in the year 2015, are the real estate prices, in many cases barely over $100 per square foot, and that includes the land. Lots are a bargain too, but with home construction prices averaging $125 per square foot, it is hard to pass up one of the existing resale homes unless you really, really want your own design. In any event, slowly but surely, savvy retirees looking for a golfing lifestyle a short drive to North Carolina’s fastest growing city, Greenville, with a major medical complex and university (East Carolina) alongside a pleasant body of water could very well make their landing at Cypress.
