No other state in the east offers more in the way of golf community choices than does North Carolina, whose 500-mile length spans ocean to mountains with a fertile Piedmont region in between. Choose from among dozens of coastal golf communities, like Landfall, just a few miles from the exciting town of Wilmington and even closer to Wrightsville Beach; or Mountain Air (photo left), whose 4,000+ foot elevation will add a few yards to your golf shots; or any of the great choices near sophisticated cities, like Asheville, Charlotte and Raleigh/Durham. And there are plenty of out-of-the-way choices where bargain real estate abounds and the golf is excellent, such as the area between Hertford (Albemarle Plantation, Scotch Hall Preserve) and Greenville (Cypress Landing, Brook Valley); and the many top notch golf communities sprinkled throughout the western North Carolina mountains.
The Coves at Round Mountain, a half hour from Blowing Rock, NC, has announced officially what we reported here a few weeks ago, that former U.S. Open champion Hale Irwin will design the community's 18...
This is a traveling day for me, heading to Camp Lejeune for three days to watch a collegiate golf tournament and then on Monday, inspecting North Shore Golf Club, in the community of the same name,...
Taberna's golf course and community are neat, on a number of levels. A couple of years ago, a local real estate agent took me for a drive around the community of Taberna near the North Carolina port...
First things first: The Coves built a welcoming gate before anything else. I spoke with a local real estate agent yesterday in Pawleys Island, SC, about the current market there. He confirmed from...
I got lost on Bald Head Island one night a few years ago, and I don't mean metaphorically. I was lost literally for about four hours on a cold November night, scared that my golf cart would run out of...
I just discovered a new web site produced by the North Carolina Division of Tourism that features information about 400 golf courses in the state. It also includes information on dining and lodging, making it...
It seems there is an almost inexhaustible amount of Blue Ridge Mountain property available. Hardly a month goes by without the debut of some new large community promising unparalleled mountain...
Architect Mike Strantz gives a wink and nod to the renowned Pine Valley, with which Tobacco Road has been compared. His tiny bunker at the 2nd green mimics the Devil's Arsehole at Pine Valley. I...
The tee shot at Tobbaco Road's 10th hole is best played down the left side for the best approach to the green. Tobacco Road's locker room, just a bathroom really, includes a dozen lockers, all...
The more I think about and write about my round last Sunday at Tobacco Road, Mike Strantz's signature design in Sanford, NC, the more I am beginning to understand that there is more to the course...
Into a stiff breeze, the carry from the 2nd tee to the raised fairway feels like 200 yards plus. Tobacco Road in Sanford, NC, made me sick the two times I have played it in the last six years. The...
A warm up at the modest driving range at Tobacco Road is almost mandatory to be limber enough to clear the two bunkers just over 200 yards from the men's tees. The fairway opens up beyond the hills...
