We are ending an awful hurricane season, a fact that might put some people off their dream of a home near the beach. My wife and I own a vacation home less than ¾ mile from the Atlantic Ocean in South Carolina and, yet, I believe the odds are with us in terms of hurricane damage. I tackle a few other topics, but maybe the most compelling information in this issue of Home On The Course is a chart I put together that shows sample home prices and the property taxes paid on them. Those of us who live in the high-tax Northeast should be especially interested in all the 3,000+ square foot homes in nice golf communities that carry property tax assessments 1/5th to 1/10th what we currently pay. How about a $300,000 home in a fine Carolina golf community with annual property taxes below $1,000? Crazy but true.
