The areas in and around the Barefoot Resort in North Myrtle Beach, SC, have been ablaze for most of today. The origin of the fire is as yet undetermined -- some reports indicate it was started by a man burning brush on his land -- but more than 60 homes have been reportedly destroyed in the Barefoot Resort and near the Grande Dunes Resort (one of the golfers out on the Grande Dunes course when the siren went off has posted a Youtube video of the not-so-distant smoke). Governor Sanford has declared a state of emergency as the fire moves inland from immediately west of the Intracoastal Waterway.
The popular Barefoot Resort features courses by Tom Fazio, Greg Norman, Pete Dye and Davis Love III. Grande Dunes, which comprises both an excellent resort course and a less interesting private club, is an enclave of expensive homes pretty much in the middle of the action in the Myrtle Beach area.
The local paper, the Myrtle Beach Sun News, is following the story closely.
