A bargain at twice the price

The 10th hole at Tanglewood's Championship Course is short and treacherous, just what a 350 yarder should be.  Vitrually any shot hit to the center of the fairway or left of it will wind up in the left rough, forcing an uphill draw around trees to the elevated and pitched green which runs about 40 yards from front to back and is guarded by four deep traps.

I played the Tanglewood Park Championship Course in Clemmons, NC, yesterday, a terrific Robert Trent Jones layout.  I had played the course in the early '70s with my father and brother and then returned a few years ago to follow my son during a junior tournament.  So Tanglewood has some nice associations for me, and it was good to play it on a gorgeous fall day.

The "championship" designation is no marketing affectation; Tanglewood hosted the 1974 PGA Championship, won by Lee Trevino.  A member of the daily fee club joined me for the last few holes and when we came to the 8th hole, which was played as the 17th in 1974, he reminded me that Jack Nicklaus hit an approach shot to the green that just skidded off the back.  It picked up a clump of mud, Nicklause three-putted and wound up losing to Trevino by just a stroke (I haven't checked this but he seemed sure of the details).

The course was in very nice shape for this time of the year, the layout is phenomenal, and the green fees one of the best bargains ever, just $35 with cart.  I'll post more photos here in the coming days.
